Abrisk walk to the communications wing and she was signing up for a LightTalk terminal and the attendant was walking her back to a dark room with a dimly lit screen and closed the door behind Deedee as she sat down in the comfortable chair. The screen brightened up when it noticed motion in front of it and waited patiently for user input. Deedee leaned in and the terminal recognized her face from her personnel file and her preferred background image appeared behind the login screen. Then she typed in her text mail designation and encrypted key password. The screen immediately unlocked and showed a listing of files from her communications unit in full-size, a scrolling listing of text mail, and the LightTalk communications program launcher.

She wasn’t sure what to do first and she wasn’t sure if she was ready to talk to anyone just yet. She rocked a little, testing the chair’s abilities. Then she spun several full revolutions in her seat. The screen beamed at her patiently. There was no mechanical voice to prompt her for input. It was actually pretty nice, the pure quiet.

She paid a few bills that had been put on long-term hold due to the contract. A few minutes later while catching up on the past year’s news and current events, she almost jumped out of her skin when a portrait of her best friend Kyle popped up in the corner of the screen accompanied by the polite chirping sound of the LightTalk’s incoming call applet that broke the pristine silence. He must have had his LT app online at work and noticed her pop on a minute earlier. When she caught her breath a moment later she resigned herself to answer so she didn’t miss her first call in over a year.

When she clicked to answer, the video feed of his face resized and took up the whole screen and a natural, pale light filled the room to illuminate her face for the camera on her end. “Hey, Kyle,” she answered, her throat feeling dry.

“Hey there, grumpy! You don’t look nearly as bad as I thought you would after being alone in the dark for so long. You must have eaten well. So? How’s the family?”

“I haven’t really talked to them yet. You’re the first from home.”

“Seriously? Well damn, lady! Go talk to your people. I’ll be around later.”

“Alright. I’ll see you around,” she said, smiling as she remembered how their banter had been since ninth school. She finished the sign-off with a middle finger up at the screen, the sign of sarcastic but real friendship for hundreds of years.

“Caio,” he replied, smiling back as he flicked the bird at his screen in turn before the window with his face shrank out of existence.
